Strive for Strength (S4S) founded in 2007 is an organization run by local high school girls whose main goal is to promote women empowerment, education, and self-confidence. Each year, the S4S team organizes and hosts a one-day retreat for middle school and high school girls, which features inspirational speakers, informative presentations, and interactive confidence-building activities. Every retreat aims to focus on one or two major themes and issues; past retreats have focused on eating disorders, bullying, and domestic violence. This year, the 2020 retreat was specifically dedicated to Suicide Prevention training for teens. In partnership with Sutter Health and Kaiser Permanente a workshop was developed with school districts and mental health professionals to destigmatize mental health discussions, educate and empower teens to lesson anxiety and depression and prevent suicide. COVID-19 cancelled the retreat but there are plans to reschedule as soon as possible. 2020 also marks S4S’ move to be coed.
MEET THE GRADUATING SENIORS
The first time I heard about Strive for Strength was in elementary school from my older sister. She told me about how much fun she had at the retreat making new friends and listening to all the empowering speakers. After that day, I couldn’t wait until I was old enough to attend one of the retreats. Soon, middle school rolls around and I was finally ready to attend Strive for Strength. I remember feeling nervous the day of the retreat not knowing if I would be with my friends or if I would be all alone. Fortunately, the speakers and all the positive people around me were extremely welcoming and friendly. I learned so much that day and left with many new friends. The following year I became a board member; and Co-president in 2019. Being part of Strive for Strength has helped me become a stronger leader. The board members, parents, supervisors, and volunteers have made me a more organized, responsible, and positive person and I’ve had such a great time working with all these amazing people. To all the graduating seniors, I would like to thank you for making such a great retreat and I wish you all the best of luck in achieving all of your future dreams and goals!
I still remember my first Strive for Strength Retreat in 7th grade. I came in with all my friends and left with many others. The speakers were so inspiring and at the end I learned many valuable life lessons. From that moment on, I knew that I wanted to be a part of this community. I am currently a senior at Cosumnes Oaks High School and the Co-president or Strive for Strength this year. I have learned a lot from my fellow board members this year. It is a rewarding experience to be a part of this community and make an impact on many young lives. I would like to thank the senior board and our advisors for guiding us to another amazing and successful retreat! I wish all the members the best of luck, as they progress from one stage in life to another!
This is my second year on the board for Strive for Strength. I am a senior at Cosumnes Oaks High School. I have been able to help plan, attend and participate in a retreat for Strive for Strength. I have learned so much from the other board members, the advisors, and the speakers who have spoken at our meetings. I am excited to attend this year’s retreat, but to also be able to share the valuable lessons that I have learned that have helped shape my thinking of the world today. Thank you to everyone who has taught me so much along the way and I can’t wait to see what the future has in store for the organization and the board members.
I attended my first Strive for Strength retreat in 2015. Five years have passed, and I have had the privilege of becoming a junior board member and progressing into a larger leadership role. Strive for Strength is a unique organization, which has paved the way for positive messages to reach girls from the greater Sacramento Area. In addition to helping others, Strive for Strength has helped me grow as an individual, allowed me to branch out of my comfort zone, and encouraged me to meet new people. I am so appreciative of the connections this organization has provided me with, along with the messages and important information I have learned along the way. This experience has been one of a kind, and I am forever in debt for all the doors it has opened me to.
I was lucky enough to be introduced to Strive for Strength by my friend Nicole Fong. I immediately loved the event and joined the board the following year. My name is Alexis Fong and am currently a senior at C.K. McClatchy High School. Being a part of Strive for Strength has taught me many life lessons. It allowed me to be more social and interactive with new people which allowed me to use that tool to make new friends. It has also given me the strength to jump out of my shell and have the ability to spread awareness about important topics that I care about. Now having these abilities, I hope to use them in the future at Hawaii pacific university where i will be attending this fall! I hope that many more can take away the same that I have from this and much more! Thank you to all of the board and our advisors for giving all us the chance to succeed through this journey!
I have been on the committee of Strive for Strength for 3 years now. Two years ago, I was a new committee member, and learned many things from the older members. This led me to take a more prominent leadership role, Co-Director of Registration, for the past two years. With this role came a lot of responsibility and the use of communication skills. This experience has helped me grow my organization and time management skills. I am proud of what the committee has accomplished, and I am grateful that I have been given the opportunity to participate in such a wonderful organization. I look forward to the future and furthering the Strive for Strength mission.
I remember my first Strive for Strength retreat; I didn’t think I would know a lot of people. I started very nervous, but the strive for strength leaders made me feel right at home. It was such a comfortable and positive environment. I really enjoyed the retreat and all the lessons I was able to take from it. And ever since that retreat in 8th grade, I have been part of the committee. Throughout these years as a part of the board, Strive for Strength has had an undeniable impact on me. Every year opens my eyes to new ways I can help other girls in the community and helps me deal with the issues of growing up. I love that every year our event is able to reach out to large audiences and show them they are not alone. Strive for Strength has taught me valuable lessons and been an amazing bonding experience that I will forever be thankful for.
